    Battling with m5stack echo kit

Ive initially struggled to get firmware update done on the unit, then once it completed, it connected to HomeAssistant quite easily.

The unit is not providing clear voice feedback, seems to break up/stop halfway through.

Ive seen there were some issues on versions of ESPHome with it, will continue to try to get it working as i had hoped it would.

So good I sold them on

The speaker has the equivalent sound of a rat farting outside in the garden. The audio recording was so so. The real reason I bought them was for voice control in Home Assistant but it seems the HA devs have higher priorities with other hardware and software than fixing the code that puts the atom echo into boot looping because the firmware is too large to fit on the programmable flash (poss due to the newer devices that come ready to provision from a web page and that new code eats the free flash memory, I have found no way to remove this pre flashed code and HA gets its knickers in a BIG twist wanting to re adopt the device every time you default the code. ) This is a brutal review of what could have been a good product but has been ruined by poor code and worse code maintainers. No one wants to help apart from the others that are in the same sinking boat. Unless you have a great knowledge base of code and can write your own code from scratch Aviod this product at all cost. I know its development hardware but having preflashed code that can not be removed so it defaults back to faulty code from a repo is not really development hardware.

    lousy

it stops responding to its activation word pretty often. pressing the button doesn't activate it either. speaker is low quality (but expected for the form factor)

Easy to set up, hard to troubleshoot.

Mine mostly works, but occasionally just crashes when giving voice responses. The documentation is sparse and the forums are underpopulated. You really should know what you're doing before buying. Remember: This is a dev kit, not a finished product. No matter how much the home assistant people hype it up.
